Hong Kong’s Organized Crime Societies | Open Secrets

In this episode, we explore the rise of triads from running underground societies to influencing national politics between China and Hong Kong. On July 21st, 2019, Hong Kong’s ongoing protests demanding independence were met with a violent attack by men in white shirts, a pivotal day in Hong Kong’s history also known as 721. For many, the violence was shocking and symbolized the death of Hong Kong’s democracy. Through the words of activists, an ex-triad member and government officials, this episode explores how the relationship between triads and China went unchecked for decades in Hong Kong, all while questioning Hong Kong’s future.
