Vanilla Ice recounted his 1991 arrest for pulling a gun on a homeless man who tried to sell him a necklace in a Los Angeles parking lot. The rapper explained he felt threatened when the man began aggressively hitting his car window. Unaware of California’s stringent gun laws, he grabbed his bodyguard’s firearm from the backseat for protection. The standoff led to a chaotic police response with Vanilla Ice facing serious charges. Dramatically, the SWAT team surrounded his vehicle, leading to a tense confrontation where Vanilla Ice was struck and detained. The rapper was represented celebrity lawyer Robert Shapiro, who notably later represented O.J. Simpson. Shapiro successfully defended Vanilla Ice, securing his release. Reflecting on the event, Vanilla Ice admitted he should have opted for a safer response, such as driving away. He also mentioned that during this period, he was filming “Cool as Ice,” a cult classic movie that despite its commercial performance, remains significant for its vivid snapshot of 90s culture.
