The Supreme Court Case that Could Undermine Elections Forever

While grand juries consider criminal charges over the 202 attempted coup, a new right-wing effort to fundamentally alter who controls elections has reached the Supreme Court. Trumpist Republicans brought an obscure legal theory to the high court, claiming that state courts–and even state constitutions–have no say in how states run federal elections. If Justices agree, it could mean that partisan state legislatures could take control of how federal elections are decided, with no checks from judges or governors. Legal experts–many of them conservative Republicans–are calling it a dangerous precedent that could turn presidential elections into partisan power-grabs.
