After video of a Michigan parent concerned about classroom litter-boxes went viral late last year, the rumor moved to social media and local politicians, spreading throughout the country until major conservative candidates were parroting the claim. To right-wing believers, the litter-box story was proof that liberal attitudes towards gender equality and identity were out of control. The only problem? The story is entirely fictitious. Since the rumor surfaced, reporters, education officials, and other experts have been debunking the idea of litter boxes in classrooms. But it seems like no amount of fact checking can stop those who really, really want to believe a plague of woke, meowing cat-children is invading schools across the country.
